Life Coaching vs. Therapy: What's the Difference and Which Do You Need?

One of the most common questions people have when seeking support is: do I need a therapist or a life coach? The answer depends on your goals, your history, and what kind of support will move you forward most effectively. Understanding the distinction — and how the two can work together — helps you make the best decision for your wellbeing. Kristina Gray, MA, offers life and wellness coaching in-person at Radiant Wellness in Jonestown, TX and via Zoom telehealth.

What Therapy Does

Therapy (also called psychotherapy or counseling) is a clinical service provided by licensed mental health professionals — psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, licensed professional counselors, or psychiatrists. Therapy is designed to diagnose and treat mental health conditions, process trauma, address deeply rooted psychological patterns, and manage symptoms of disorders like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD. Therapy is often covered by insurance and is regulated by state licensing boards.

What Life & Wellness Coaching Does

Life and wellness coaching is a forward-focused, goal-oriented partnership. Rather than diagnosing or treating conditions, coaching helps clients clarify their values and vision, identify obstacles to their goals, develop actionable strategies, build accountability, and create sustainable habits. Coaching is particularly powerful for people who are functionally healthy but feel stuck, unfulfilled, or disconnected from their potential. It's also highly effective as a complement to therapy.

Key Differences at a Glance

Therapy tends to focus on the past and present — understanding how past experiences shape current patterns. Coaching focuses on the present and future — where you are now and where you want to go. Therapy addresses pathology; coaching addresses potential. Therapy is typically covered by insurance; coaching is typically a private-pay service. Both require a trusting relationship and a commitment to the process.

When You Might Need Both

Many people benefit from working with both a therapist and a life coach simultaneously. Therapy can address the underlying emotional wounds and mental health symptoms, while coaching helps translate insights into concrete action and life change. For example, someone working through body dysmorphia might see a therapist for clinical treatment while working with Kristina to rebuild self-confidence, develop a healthier relationship with their body, and create a life vision that extends beyond their appearance.

Is Life Coaching Right for You?

Life coaching is a strong fit if you're feeling stuck or unfulfilled despite being functionally okay, you have clear goals but struggle to execute on them, you want accountability and a structured approach to personal growth, or you're navigating a major life transition (career change, relationship shift, health journey). If you're experiencing active mental health symptoms, please seek clinical support first — Kristina can work alongside your treatment team.
